Abstract: | We consider the sampling strategy of for sparse recovery of polynomial chaos expansions via compressed sensing. The motivation for this study it uncertainty quantification. In particular, we propose a general framework that sampling with respect to the (weighted) pluripotential equilibrium measure of the domain, and subsequently solves a weighted L1 minimization. The framework covers both the bounded and unbounded cases. We also discuss potential applications of this approach -- handling arbitrary polynomial chaos expansions. |

Abstract: | Gene expression studies have been playing a pivotal role for the research on many complex diseases. With the high dimensionality and noisy nature of data, the analysis of gene expression studies, despite many promising findings, is still often unsatisfactory. In recent omics studies, a prominent trend is to conduct multidimensional studies, where gene expressions are profiled along with their regulators (methylation, copy number variation, microRNA, and others). In a series of studies, we have developed assisted analysis techniques, which use regulator information to assist the regression, clustering, and other analysis of gene expression data. The assisted analysis differs from the analysis of gene expression data only and integrated analysis in multiple aspects. Numerical and statistical investigations show promising performance of the assisted analysis. |

Abstract: | Multivariate interpolation schemes and rational approximations have many useful applications and their theoretical foundations are interesting to study mathematically too. In this talk we report about new methods that employ kernel methods for rational interpolation and other general interpolation algorithms. For this, the existence properties of the kernel method interpolants are studied as well, based on their multiply monotonicity properties. |

Abstract: | "Hands-on, minds-on", and "Mathe macht glücklich" ["Maths makes you happy"] are the mottos of the Mathematikum. About 200 experiments on 1500 m^2 on four floors invite the visitors to try and understand what mathematics is about - in easy to try, but non-trivial mathematical problems and puzzles. The concept is to explain basics - and modern research subjects - of mathematics in a way that people enjoy and understand what the ideas and usefulness of mathematics are all about. The subjects range from Pythagoras theorem to unsolved conjectures about prime numbers - and more than 160,000 visitors per year speak for themselves. |

Abstract: | In this talk, we consider some numerical approaches to solving Cordial Volterra integral equations with vanishing delays. Collocation methods with uniform mesh as well as graded mesh are implemented on some strategic examples. Convergence rates and existence and uniqueness of the collocation solution are considered. |
